The problem
A freight and customs operation needed clients to see exactly where their merchandise was at every point of the import lifecycle — and to be kept informed without staff sending manual updates. We built a full-stack web application plus an Android app (web-view) that tracks the real-time status of each shipment and fires an automated client email at each stage.
Role-based access
Four roles with distinct access: Administrator (create users, full access and change history), Operations Manager, Officers (update merchandise status and values), and Client (view current status and history reports by category and month, through the interface and by email).
Shipment lifecycle & automated notifications
The platform tracks each shipment end to end, with every stage automatically emailing the client: (1) Salida de mercancía (dispatch), (2) Llegada a Santa Elena (arrival), (3) Traslado — direct unload vs. transfer to warehouse, (4) Nacionalización in five steps (Documentación, Permisos, Traslado, DUA, Pago), (5) Expediente presentado a la aduana (file presented to customs), and (6) Pase de salida (exit pass).
Workflow & reporting
A workflow/status engine drives the lifecycle while client reporting surfaces current status and history. (The original build was historically hosted on Vultr with Namecheap domains; that is historical context only and not the Railway stack we standardize on today.)
